After an adjuster inspects the damage, you may be offered a certain sum of money for repairs.

The first check you get from your insurance company is not the final payment.

■  If you're offered an on-the-spot settlement, you can accept the check right away.

■  If you find other damage later, you can "reopen" the claim and file for an additional amount.

■  If both the structure of your home and personal belongings are damaged, you generally receive two separate checks, one for each category of damage.

■  You should also receive a separate check for additional living expenses if you can¡¦t live home due to rebuilding.

Your insurance company provides an adjuster who has no relationship with them. Public adjusters also may contact you. You may use a public adjuster to help you in settling your claim.

1. Service fee:

Public adjuster fee isn't covered by your insurance policy. You may be charged as much as 15 percent of the total value of your settlement for their services.

2. Qualifications:

If you decide to use a public adjuster, remember to check his or her qualifications by calling your state insurance department. Ask for a recommendation from your agent, a lawyer or friends.
