Homeowners policy is a contract between you and insurance company where you and your insurer must follow rules and procedures. Read your insurance policy to see what your responsibilities are.

Report to the police, and get a police report and the names of all law enforcement officers that you speak with.

Call to your insurance company during the limit time to file claims.

Ask questions:

■ Am I covered?

■  Does my claim exceed my deductible?

■  How long will it take to process my claim?

■ Will I need to obtain estimates for repairs to structural damage?

Repair your property from further damage. Save receipts for what you spend and send them to your insurance company for reimbursement.

You have to prove your loss.

1. Keep damaged items until the adjuster visit your home.

2. Photograph or videotape the damage.

3. Prepare a home inventory and make a copy for your adjuster

4. Supply copies of receipts from damaged items.

If you need to find other accommodations while your home is repaired, keep records of all additional expenses incurred.
Once your insurance company receives your claim, they will send you the necessary claim forms by the end of a specified time period. Return the properly filled out forms as soon as possible.
An adjuster may be arranged to come and inspect your home.
